Web Design – A History

Web design has a relatively brief past. In fact in the great scheme of things the internet has not been around that long and therefore neither has web design.

Although web design has not been around for long it has definitely undergone many changes in its brief history. When web design first came along it needed to be accessible to the less technically gifted and this was when HTML was invented.

Web design owes a hige gratitude to HTML as it paved the way for would be designers to apply thyeir art to the internet. The biggest frustration with HTML was the fact that to change a certain colour or style all pages needed to be edited. But then came CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) with the ability to properly divide the style and structure of sites on the web.

• Correct placement and style of the navigation menus on your website is one of teh most important factors to a successful website design. You need to know in which direction you want your users to go and then make it clear from the design of your website.
• The constructive use of white space through out your website will aid your users in focusing their eyes on the bits of information you think are important. Don’t let your good content go to waste by cluttering your website with too many ads use whitre space to highlight the content you spent time writting.
• Don’t use tables for displaying your website as this is another layer of code that can be easily replicated by the correct use of a style sheet. The only reason you needed to use the HTML markup for a table in your website is when you actually want to display a table to users.
• You need a fast webiste. The speed of your website is now used as a ranking factor in google‘s algorithm. While not inhibiting your natural design flare it is important to make some compromises when it comes to the speed of your page.
• Making sure that your website can support a number of different internet browsers will help you reach the largest audience possible. Having your website displayed properly on all web browsers will help maintain your site and company image. Internet explorer is the browser that creates the most problems in this respect but also has the largest market share in the browser market.
